M.P.P. & M.A.S. Programs

The Jackson School of Global Affairs offers professional degrees for students who are pursuing careers in government, public affairs, and private organizations addressing global issues. Its programs are distinctive for their balance of rigorous academic training and real-world engagement. Students gain access to practitioners and policymakers, but they also have the space to step back and think deeply across industries and backgrounds. In this way, the program is about both professional impacts and preparing to lead for society.

Students apply through the Jackson School of Global Affairs website, https://jackson.yale.edu. The online application is typically available from August through December for enrollment the following August. Candidates may pursue only one degree application in a given year.

Qualifications

Master in Public policy in Global Affairs (M.P.P.)

This is a two-year multidisciplinary training at the intersection of theory and practice that expands students’ thinking and strengthens their leadership for early- to mid-career individuals. Through a combination of external and Yale scholarships, M.P.P. students pay no tuition. It is recommended that entering students have taken introductory courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics prior to matriculating, as well as have basic language proficiency in a modern language other than English.

Master of Advanced Study in Global Affairs (M.A.S.)

This one-year program offers flexible training in fields most relevant to global affairs for mid- to late-career individuals.

B.A.-B.S./M.P.P.

Current Yale College students interested in the field of global affairs may apply in the spring of their junior year to earn a bachelor’s degree from Yale College and a M.P.P. degree from the Jackson School of Global Affairs in a five-year joint program.

Joint-Degree Programs

To enhance the educational opportunity of its graduate students, the Jackson School collaborates with Yale’s professional schools and has developed the following joint-degree programs that fulfill the requirements of each school: 

• School of Management: M.B.A/M.P.P.
• School of the Environment: M.E.M/M.P.P, M.F./M.P.P, M.E.Sc./M.P.P, M.F.S./M.P.P.
• School of Public Health: M.P.H./M.P.P.
• Law School: J.D./M.P.P

Candidates must apply and be admitted to each school separately. Candidates can apply simultaneously at the outset or to the second program before they are in their final year of one of the programs at Yale.

Application Fees and Waivers

To make the application as accessible as possible, the Jackson School of Global Affairs may set policies to waive part or all of the application fee. No preference will be given to candidates based on their application fee.

Deferring Admission

The Jackson School will consider deferral requests primarily in cases of extreme hardship or illness, military deployment, or inability to travel to the US due to visa restrictions or complications. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and should be addressed to the assistant dean for admissions at jackson.admissions@yale.edu.

World Fellows

The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program is a non-degree leadership development program based in the International Leadership Center. Accepted applicants are appointed as Postgraduate Fellows during their time at Yale.

Applicants should be between five and twenty-five years into their professional careers, with demonstrated, significant accomplishments at a regional, national, or international level. Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the United States. While applicants who hold dual citizenship with the United States are eligible, strong preference is given to candidates whose work is focused outside the United States. Applicants must be fluent in English.

Applicants must submit an online application including a personal statement and three letters of recommendation. An application fee of $20 is required for the World Fellows Program. The application deadline typically falls during the first week of December for the following year’s program. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee and decisions are typically released in April. To learn more please visit https://worldfellows.yale.edu.
